5 Months

I can't believe it! Carter turned 5 months last Thursday, October 11th. At his 5 month Dr. visit he weighed in at 16 lbs 4 oz (75%), was 25 3/4 in long (90%) and his head measured at 43 cm (75%). The Dr. said he's growing and developing very well and even seemed king of surprised at all he's doing already.

Let's get up to date on what all he's doing now. Carter is rolling clear across the floor now until he gets stuck and can't go any farther. He's figuring out that he can roll to get to where he really wants to go. He's turning on his belly to move around too. He can kind of scoot forwards on his belly by planting his head down and pushing with his feet. He just can't seem to figure out how to get up on his hands yet. So at this point you never know what position you're going to find him in, in his crib. This is a very frustrating time for Carter. He just wants to get down and go so badly. He spends time by transferring for different things. He goes from his exersaucer to his Bumpo seat to the swing to the floor and all over again. Sometimes he spends more time in some areas than in others. It just depends on his mood. He's starting to show a little temper when he gets mad and frustrated. He's still pretty wobbly when trying to sit up. His balance is pretty good when he leans forward but if he's upright he goes over pretty quickly. Hopefully he'll get this down pretty soon because I think he'll be much happier once he can sit up. Carter is grabbing at anything he can get a hold of. If he's sitting on your lap at the table we're at the point where we have to clear everything out of the way so he doesn't grab it. Same goes for when he's sitting in his Bumpo seat on the table or island in our kitchen. He's a strong little guy! Carter found his feet a couple of weeks ago and loves to play with them. He also found his loud voice a few weeks ago and boy does he use it. He squeals and squawks very loudly when he's happy.

Carter started with his first cold 2 weeks ago. He's had a little bit of a runny nose and a terrible sounding post nasal drip cough. He's been good natured about it but the crud just won't seem to go away. He's also pretty miserable with his teeth. You can see his 2 bottom teeth below the gums. He's drooling like crazy and pulling everything to his mouth and chomping on everything. We have to give him Tylenol every 4 hours otherwise he's just miserable.

Except when Carter's hungry, tired or teeth are bothering him he's a very happy guy. He smiles all the time. I have gotten a little giggle out of him a time or two but he's still working on that. He absolutely adores his big sister and watches everything she does. I keep telling Elle that she's in big trouble once he's mobile. She just laughs and thinks it's funny. We'll see... Just in the past few days Carter has started eating better. He's trying to hold his bottle too. He's starting to take full 6 - 7 oz bottles about every 4 hours. This is much nicer than the 3 or 4 oz here and there. We will get to start cereal in a couple of weeks. I was hoping to start sooner but our Dr. wants up to wait until he's 6 months. I'll probably start a bit sooner because he's really interested when we are eating. I can tell he really wants to try it too. He has a look on his face like, "I want some of that."

We moved Carter to his big boy car seat almost 2 weeks ago. He was getting to the length limit for his infant carrier plus it was just killing me to lug him around in it. He doesn't seem to care for his big boy seat anymore than his infant carrier. He still struggles and cries when we put him in it. Once he's in he seems to be okay. But man, watch out once you undo the buckle. He arches his back to get out of there. It must be sheer torture for a guy like him that is always moving to be strapped in so tightly.

As for sleeping, Carter's doing pretty well. Just in the last week and a half he's started sleeping almost or all the way through the night. He's gone as long as 9:00 pm to 6:30 am. Most nights he makes it to 5 am or so and take a bottle and then goes back to sleep until 7 or so. It's been nice! He goes down anywhere from 8:30 - 9:30 pm. It depends on what time he got up from his last nap. The last few nights it been more around 8:30 but we've had a night or 2 when he's up until 10:00 too. There's definitely no consistency yet. Same goes for his naps during the day. It all depends on what time he gets up in the morning. He still has that little clock in him in which he needs to take a nap every 2 hours after he wake up for the one before. It is 2 hours on the nose too. Then he sleeps about 45 minutes and he's up and ready to go. We've had a few 2 hour+ afternoon naps but those are far and few between. Usually it's 45 minutes on the nose and he's up. Our Dr. said his sleep cycle is probably 45 minutes and he wakes up after that first cycle and then doesn't got back to sleep. He said that's okay as long as we're okay with it and has he grows he'll get in to a 2 longer naps a day schedule. We're looking forward to that because it's next to impossible to get anything done around here when he only sleep 45 minutes at a time. But the important thing is that he's doing very well at night. We still have to help him fall asleep. We still flip him on his left side and put his binkie in his mouth and he's out right away. We put him down right away and off to dreamland he goes.

Well that's all I can think of for now. Looking back at all this he's really accomplished a lot in the last month. I'm sure there is something I'm missing but I guess that's it for now. Here are some pictures I took this month.

"Yeah! I found my toes!"

Such a good big sister!

Carter with Papa Eric

We went to my dad's Columbus Day weekend.

Carter and Daddy napping on Papa Eric's couch.

I thought this was just too cute!

A future firefighter in the making.
